With Christina Gruber

A subjective approach of the rivers Mississippi and the Danube through the prism of science fiction, fantasy and horror literature genres. From Amstetten in Austria to Sulina’s beach in Romania, From Mud To Outer Space tries to identify what builds a river’s identity through the libraries on its shores, the music that floats along its path and the people that it meets along the way. This book was made and written with Christina Gruber, freshwater ecologist and visual artist, between June 2017 and January 2018.

We start from Amstetten in Lower Austria (AT). We follow the Danube river until the Delta (RO).
From West to Eastern Europe across the Atlantic, like a 3D timeline from Paleo-Ocean until today’s encounters, through the former and current borders and the mystical landscapes of gothic, fantasy and sci-fi text we find in libraries along our way, from mud to outer space.
We collect fragments and stories from the books that we read and the people we meet. We try to stitch them together, to connect the Danube and the Mississippi in literature. Water provides a rich feeding ground for the most bizarre narratives. The river itself carries all kinds od pieces along its own bed and mixes them into something heterogeneous.
We collaborate with artists, scientists, archivists, librarians, guides, fishermen, musicians, engineers, travellers, tourists, friends, known and unknown, like Kanye West.

The book was presented in different places in Austria : In Depot (Vienne), Angewandte Innovation Lab (Vienne), Salonchiff Florentine (Linz) and Universitätsbibliothek der Akademie der bildenden Künste (Vienne)

From Mud to Outer Space est le point de départ de Be Water My Friend de Christina Gruber, des conférences Sturgeons and Dragons en collaboration avec Thomas Friedrich, scientifique spécialiste des eaux douces et principal investigateur du projet de rétablissement de populations d’Acipenser ruthenus, dans le Danube, LIFE-STERLET, ainsi que de ma reprise d’études en biologie à l’Université d’Aix-Marseille, puis à Intechmer.

From Mud to Outer Space is the starting point of Christina Gruber’s project  Be Water My Friend, her conferences Sturgeons and Dragons in collaboration with Thomas Friedrich, scientist at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, and PI of the LIFE-STERLET project. It was also the trigger that got me back to university to study marine biology first in Marseille, then in Cherbourg.
