Une page de traitement de texte A4 blanche s’ouvre et on tape sur le clavier les premiers mots du roman : Je m’appelle Ishmaël. Mettons. Les lettres s’espacent bizarrement ou se chevauchent. Le traitement de texte est spécial : son curseur avance à vitesse constante. À la première faute de frappe, on essaye de revenir en arrière mais c’est impossible. Alors, on avance dans le texte, un peu chaque jour. 17 minutes, pour être précis. C’est le temps qu’il faut au curseur partant d’en haut à gauche de la page pour balayer toutes les lignes jusqu’à la dernière en bas à droite.
Répété le plus souvent possible en ambitionnant la régularité parfaite et l’absence d’erreur, ce rituel et son livre ont accompagné quelques années studiantines puis d’autres plus chaotiques.
Moby Dick, c’est l’histoire de la chasse à la baleine. L’histoire de la chasse à la baleine c’est l’histoire de l’humain qui se mesure à l’inconnu, au gigantesque, au monstrueux, à la mer et à ses créatures.

A A4 page on the computer screen. I start typing the first words of the novel : Call me Ishmael. The text appears, showing random overlapping letters and innumerable blank spaces. The word processor is special, self developped : a cursor follows the lines of text at a constant speed, taking seventeen minutes to move from the top to the bottom of a page. First typo, I try to go backwards over the text but it is impossible. So I move on : I copy the novel little by little. The cursor takes seventeen minutes to move from the top to the bottom of a page, I try to do it everyday. With the ambition of making a perfect page by reaching a steady rythm and making no mistakes, I spent a few years during my studies and beyond reactivating this ritual and reading the book that has been haunting me for a long time now.
Moby Dick is the story of whaling. Whaling is the history of humans confronting the unknown, the gigantic, the monstruous, the sea and its creatures.
